Dogs That Don't Bite

Weekly writing prompt: Lay It Down
I was out of town for work again this week so this was indeed a quick turnaround. I like the words to this one and may go back to this at some point. I wrote it Wednesday at 5 am in my hotel bed after a nice walk along the James river the night before. I had an intense dream about the awful world eating sensitive people up who don't bite back.
Also, last Sunday a pileated woodpecker flew into the window at my house that faces the lake.  A LOT of birds fly into it. It's a very distinct sound. This poor gal took a pretty direct shot and in turn took a really long time to reboot. Like, a really long time. I thought she might not make it. Anyways, that lil slice of life made it into this tune. In the song, we the listener indeed hit that window and need a reboot. You have been forewarned, don't stare at your reflection too long...
Dogs That Don't Bite

All the dogs that don’t bite
They’ve drowned them in the river
If you go down you might get pushed in it too
Don’t let them stand that close to you
All The birds in midflight
That crash into the window
If you go down you might see your reflection too
Don’t let it stare too long back at you
The stars that stay out all night
Burn into embers
Left for the day and the dead to remember
Don’t let your heart stay out all night too
Just lay it down in a soft and shallow grave
Just deep enough to be easily dug up again
By hand or spade
The wild dreams that wander the wide open plains
Get lost and lonesome
When only darkness remains
Don’t let your dreams wander too far away
Just lay them down in a soft and shallow grave

Just deep enough to be easily dug up again

By hand or spade

Just lay it down before it gets too late

It was fine and eventually flew right back to hitting its head against a tree looking for bugs.
